Agricultural consultancy is a special field of nutrient input consultancy. It can be regarded as a balance because the amount of nutrients needed for the planned yield level is assumed on one hand and the nutrient providing capacity of the soil and the efficient resource utilization are considered on the other hand.
The nutrient providing capacity of the soil depends on the total nutrient content of the soil, the chemical composition of the comprised compounds, the equilibrium processes and the microbiological activity in the soil, and the nutrient digesting capacity of the root systems of the plants.

Thus, in addition to the total nutrient content of the soil, it is also very important to define the absorbable nutrient content. These values can be well determined using soil examination and plant analytical methods. The soil examinations shall be repeated periodically every 3 to 5 years for proper nutrient input.

In Hungary, fertilization principles developed by MÉM NAK are widely used, which determine the nitrogen supply of the soil based on its humus content, and the absorbable phosphorus and potassium supply on the basis of their solubility in ammonium lactate, considering Arany Clay Number and CaCO₃ content. The other properties determining the yields are taken into account on the bases of farming place categories derived from the genetic classification of soils.
